Katsumata is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Fukubei) of the manga 20th Century Boys, created by Naoki Urasawa. He is Fukubei's partner and the second Friend upon the former's death. As Friend, Katsumata sought to finish Fukubei's work and start spreading tales of aliens invading to keep innocent people terrified.

Biography[]

Katsumata was one of the members of Fukubei's group. He grew up bullied by others, similar to Fukubei, resulting in his hatred of humanity. He always wear a mask and never revealed his face. He also hates Kenji, who was responsible for his "death" as a child.

Kenji once stole a prize from the local candy shop and left Katsumata to take the blame. This resulted in Katsumata being scolded by the shopkeeper in front of his classmates. Afterwards, Fukubei and Yamane approached him as Fukubei said he deserved the death penalty for what he did. However, Fukubei and Yamane confused Katsumata with SadaKiyo, so they spread the rumor that SadaKiyo died instead of Katsumata.

Later, Katsumata's supposed death would take place the day before the carp dissection happened. A rumor was made that his ghost was seen carrying out the dissection in the science room that night, and it was believed that Donkey, one of Kenji's friends, was terrified by something in the science room. Katsumata eventually joined Fukubei's group as the fourth member, and never showed his face since he was wearing a mask. Unlike Fukubei, who faked having supernatural powers, Katsumata seems to have precognitive powers as a result of the experiments of Kanna Endō's powers. Also, his reason for destroying the world differs from Fukubei's, in which he believes the world was unnecessary, while Fukubei simply wanted attention, and get fixated on beating Kenji.

Upon Fukubei's death, Katsumata took his place as Friend and continued his work. He created a new virus and destroyed all of humanity, and kept sending small boxes of vaccines to the rebels, knowing they'll tear themselves apart with the antidote. Katsumata later attempts to murder Kanna, while making Kenji to watch, as revenge for his transgression against him many years ago.

Even when Kenji apologized for what he did to him as a child, Katsumata refused to accept his apology, and at that point, Katsumata was killed after getting crushed and impaled by the debris of a flying saucer, when Fukubei's former assassin, Number 13, crashed an helicopter into it.

Trivia[]

  • In the perfect manga edition of 21st Century Boys, it's revealed that Katsumata was the only Friend, with Fukubei dying as a child and Katsumata impersonating him. Whether this was the original intended ending, however, is heavily debated.
